Tallow is a great byproduct of your animals! You can use it to cook, make candles and soap with it and use it in skincare products. Tallow also has a lot of health benefits, it is good for cardiovascular health, fat loss, healthy skin and immune boosting.
If you raised your own backyard meat, you probably have lots of fat available after you slaughtered it. This is a great way to process your fat so that you can use it instead of using expensive and unhealthy oils from the store.
You’ll need:
- crock pot
- sieve
- fat ( preferably grass-fed)
- cheesecloth
- bowl
- airtight containers/mason jars
Cut up your fat into small cubes, removing any meat, bones and hair that may be present. You can grind up the fat cubes in a food processor if you want to but I think that’s too much work to do!
Next, over medium heat, heat up the fat until it starts to sizzle. Turn down the heat and allow to simmer for about half an hour. Stir every few minutes to prevent it from burning.
You’ll notice that the particles of fat will start to turn brown and decrease in size. When the particles are hard, small and crunchy, it’s ready to strain.
Line the coriander with the cheesecloth and put it over the bowl. Allow the tallow to cool a little bit before you pour it into the coriander. Wait until all the fat drips from the sieve and pour it into your airtight container.
Allow to cool and it’s ready to use! Now you know how to render tallow.
